The Qidong Shunxiang Coal Mine Methane Utilisation Project is intended to use drained CMM from Qidong coal mine of Wanbei Coal-electricity Group Co., Ltd. as fuel for power generation instead of directly venting it to the atmosphere.

The project will install an electricity generation station fuelled by CMM. The total installed capacity is 3.6 MW, including 3×1.2MW Chinese-built CMM-fuelled engine generators. The electricity for this CMM captive power plant will supply part of the mine’s energy demand and reduce power consumption of Wanbei Coal and Power Co., Ltd. from East China Power Grid.

Through collection and utilization of CMM for power generation instead of direct venting, the project will avoid the direct CMM venting to the atmosphere and replace the electricity from East China Power Grid which is dominated by coal fired power plants, therefore mitigating GHG emission. The project is estimated to utilize about 4 million m3 pure methane per year, and generate about 12,442 MWh electricity annually.
