GHG Protocol: Scopes
From WikiClimate
The GHG Protocol defines three “scopes” for GHG reporting that can used by companies or public bodies to measure direct and indirect emissions of greenhouse gases.
Summary of Scopes
The GHG Protocol defines three “scopes” for GHG accounting:
- Scope 1 - Direct CO2 emissions from combustion of fossil fuels (including energy used for on-site CHP) and owned transport, direct and fugitive emissions of other GHGs
- Scope 2 - Scope 1, plus indirect emissions from electricity use
- Scope 3 - Scope 2, plus indirect emissions from transport (eg. miles flown) and other inputs which may include employee travel to work and supply chain emissions.
The CO2 emissions associated with Scope 2 vary from country to country dependent on the fuel mix. For example, quoted emissions in France may appear lower due to their high dependence on nuclear electricity.
